As initially conceived, there was no Penny, the lovable girl-next-door on CBS’ top-rated comedy, “The Big Bang Theory.” There was just a super-sarcastic neighbor named Katie who was mercilessly mean to her super-geek neighbors, Leonard and Sheldon.
But test audiences despised that character, and the show’s producers went back to the drawing board.
After the rewrite, producers brought back in Kaley Cuoco to read for the role of Penny. Cuoco, who, at the time, was best-known for her role as the eldest daughter on ABC’s “8 Simple Rules,” had auditioned to play Katie, but that part wasn’t right for her, she says. ... Read More ...

Big Bang Scoop: Sheldon and Penny

Holding out hope for a Sheldon-Penny romance on The Big Bang Theory? It might be time to throw in the towel. Speaking to reporters at press tour this morning, exec producer Chuck Lorre pretty much shot down any chance there was of the polar opposites hooking up.
“Part of what’s wonderful and unique about [Sheldon] is he has chosen not to play in the relationship game either way — heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, any sexuality,” Lorre said. “He has said, ‘This is not for me. I’m a scientist. All I’m interested in is science and what George Lucas thinks.’ We’ve stumbled into creating a character who has chosen a lifestyle for himself that is unique. And I don’t see any reason to modify it.”
Added fellow e.p. Bill Prady: “[Sheldon] has made [a] choice that work and all of that is where he finds his passion.” ... Read More ...

To inspire you, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki, stars of the hit CBS sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” joined PARADE Contributing Editor Dr. Mark Liponis for a three-day stay at Canyon Ranch Health Resort, where he is the medical director. They were game for some healthy changes. Are you?
Kaley and Johnny are both young and healthy, but they wanted to look and feel even better. So on a brief hiatus recently from shooting their TV show, they visited me in Lenox, Mass. Over a period of three days, we ran tests to check everything from cholesterol to bone density to blood sugar, then gave them advice on health, nutrition, and fitness. Through it all, Kaley and Johnny were great sports. They agreed to share their experiences so that others could benefit from what they learned, too.
